“Dispatchers heard him say ‘drop the knife son, drop the knife.’ The male then replied ‘no’ and shots were heard,” Johnson told reporters.

A former Niceville Police officer is dead following a domestic incident in Gulf Breeze in which he is believed to have stabbed both of his parents several times.

Erich Reitz, 29, was released by the Niceville agency in 2018 after demonstrating signs of “psychological instability,” according to Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson, who conducted a Wednesday morning press conference to discuss the Tuesday afternoon incident.

His father, who fired the shots that killed Reitz, and his mother were both treated for multiple stab wounds at Baptist Hospital and are listed in stable condition, Johnson said. The names of the parents were not released.

Deputies were summoned to the Blair Circle, Gulf Breeze, address at 3:40 p.m., Tuesday. Johnson said a woman called dispatchers and said her son had stabbed her. A man then came on the phone to report that the son had stabbed him too.

“Dispatchers heard him say ‘drop the knife son, drop the knife.’ The male then replied ‘no’ and shots were heard,” Johnson told reporters.

Officers arrived at the home to find three people on the ground, Johnson said. Reitz was taken to West Florida Hospital, where he died.

Reitz suffered multiple gun shot wounds during the altercation. Johnson said he couldn’t say for sure how many times he’d been shot, but estimated it to be about six times.

The Sheriff’s Office Major Crime Unit is continuing its investigation in the case, but Johnson speculated Reitz’s “mental instability” is what led to the fatal incident.

The father is not expected to be charged Johnson said.

Reitz's name was placed on the Giglio/Brady list in January of 2018 after he was Baker Acted, according to records from the First Judicial Circuit's State Attorney's Office.

The Giglio/Brady roster primarily lists the names of law enforcement officers who, for whatever reason, cannot be relied upon to truthfully testify in court proceedings.
