MILTON — A Milton fast-food eatery known for its soft serve ice cream was shut down after inspectors discovered live bugs and raw meat stored atop cooked food.

Tastee Freez, located at 6511 Caroline St., received three high priority and 11 basic violations on Thursday, according to an inspection report.

Inspectors said they saw five live roaches and four dead roaches on the premises. There were also 11 live, small flying insects in the kitchen and food preparation area.

Another high priority violation was raw animal food stored over ready-to-eat food. There was raw chicken over cut onions and tomatoes in the walk in cooler. There was also raw burgers over cut lettuce. The violation was corrected on site.

Some of the basic violations included a mold-like substance on buckets on a clean equipment rack, gaskets with slimy/mold-like build up and debris throughout the kitchen area and a wall soiled with accumulated grease, food debris and/or dust.

Inspectors came back Friday and the fly and roach issue, plus nine of the basic violations remained, the report said. They came back again the same day and only seven of the basic violations remained.

The restaurant met standards and was allowed to reopen.
