Emerald Coast Sailing Association offers week-long sailing camps at the Fort Walton Yacht Club through June and July teaching children ages 7-18 the fundamentals of sailing. ECSA Sailing Director Paul Beaudry said the there are classes for beginners and advanced sailors alike.
The beginner program is designed to help young children who have never sailed before or have done one sailing camp in the past become more comfortable around the water and on boats.
We'll teach them how to sail out around the marker and back to the beach," said Beaudry.
Older students and more advanced sailors learn safety skills such as righting a capsized boat, as well as basic nomenclature and how to rig and de-rig a sailboat. The basics of tacking, jibing, and docking and beaching a sailboat will be covered.
The camp also has a series for more advanced sailors on the basics of sailboat racing.
