DESTIN — The Texas visitor who drowned Tuesday at Crab Island has been identified as 43-year-old Thanh Bui of Austin.
At approximately 3 p.m., the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was notified of the incident, which happened near Crab Island.
Bui turned 43 on the day that he died.
He was operating a 30-foot pontoon boat that held seven adults and seven children, according to preliminary information released by FWC.
Bui jumped off the boat to set the anchor in what appeared to be shallow water, lost his footing and was unable to swim, according to preliminary information.
"Our hearts go out to Mr. Thanh Bui and his friends and family," FWC spokeswoman Rebekah Nelson said.
No one else on the boat was injured. FWC, Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office and the United States Coast Guard were on scene. Destin Beach Safety also helped search for the body until lightning forced them to suspend the search.
The body was recovered by OCSO divers at about 6:20, more than three hours after he went missing, according to reports.
The investigation is ongoing.
