JACKSONVILLE — Fort Walton Beach native A. Noel Garvie was crowned Miss Florida National American Teen & Collegiate on June 26 in Jacksonville.

She also won an overall Top Scholar award for having a 4.25 grade point average and advances to competition for the national title in August.

Judges selected winners based on criteria such as personal interviews, onstage questions, a fitness segment, fashion and evening wear competitions, and community service.

Garvie entered the pageant to develop her self-confidence and ability to speak in front of others, according to a media release. The teen wants to help others who may struggle with being true to themselves.

She also will use her voice to make a difference in lives of other families, like hers, that are affected by chronic genetic illnesses.

Garvie and her sister, Brooks, were diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease at young ages. PKD causes uncontrolled growth of cysts in the kidney, often leading to kidney failure. There is no cure, and only recently has a treatment been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

“When you think you can do anything and that you have your whole life in front of you, and then you learn you have an untreatable, uncurable, life-long disease, it’s overwhelming,” Garvie said.

The sisters took time off from their passion, dance, in midseason to learn more about their disease, how to manage their pain and to heal.

Afterward, they joined the Jacksonville Giants junior dance team, and have been on it for two years. They are also honor roll students, despite often missing school to deal with flare-ups and medical appointments.

Garvie is on a mission to help raise PKD awareness, advance research and increase government funding. She also will begin seeking sponsors to host a PKD Walk in north Florida in her year of FNTC service.

Garvie's parents are Nichole and Bill Garvie Jr. Her grandparents are Martha and the late Bill Garvie Sr. Garvie works for her grandmother during the summers at Aunt Martha's Bed & Breakfast in Fort Walton Beach.
