NICEVILLE — Sharon Dooley on Monday received recognition for her "outstanding support" of the Okaloosa County School District for her School Scoops column that appears Mondays and Saturdays in the Northwest Florida Daily News during the school years.
Dooley took over the education column that focuses on Okaloosa students in 1998 from current Managing Editor Wendy Victora.
"We have great kids involved in other ways than sports who deserve recognition," Dooley said. "I was so humbled."
Okaloosa Schools Superintendent Marcus Chambers called her a "strong partner" of the school system.
"If you ever had a child in School Scoops, you were extremely proud," Chambers said.
Dooley and her husband, Paul, moved to Okaloosa County in 1987, and both of their sons attended local schools. The couple also volunteered. Dooley served as a media center aide in 1997 and served the district for seven years.
A Texas Christian University journalism graduate, she told Chambers that she "applies old-fashioned journalism to modern-day media."
"Sharon believes that public school education is a four-way partnership among the students, the educators, the volunteers and the community as a whole," Chambers said. "All the partners must work together to ensure our students grow up to be healthy, productive and successful."
