Newlyweds Kasey and Tyler Samuels took a break from their destination wedding on the Emerald Coast to surprise her grandmother, who broke her hip the night before the wedding.

SOUTH WALTON — Rita Scanlon’s broken hip kept her from attending her granddaughter’s wedding on Saturday at The Chapel at Seaside. But that didn't keep granddaughter Kasey Samuels from giving her as close to the full wedding experience as possible.

Monday afternoon, Kasey took her new husband, Tyler, to Sacred Heart Hospital on The Emerald Coast in Miramar Beach to visit her grandmother, which Rita had expected at some point. What she didn’t expect was the new couple to show up in full wedding regalia – Tyler in a tuxedo and Kasey in her wedding dress.

“She was pretty much in tears … she couldn’t believe it,” Kasey said. “She knew we’d make the trip there, but the full gown and tuxedo caught her by surprise.”

Rita broke her hip Friday morning when she slipped and fell in her condo ahead of that night's rehearsal dinner. She called Kasey’s father, John, who was out shopping, and he called Kasey right away. Kasey took off in a sprint to her grandmother’s condo – about 1 mile away – and eventually flagged down a golf cart.

Kasey, who is a nurse in Dallas, called an ambulance, and Rita underwent surgery on Friday. Kasey’s father will stay in Florida for a few more weeks as Rita recovers from her injury and begins the rehab process before she can head back to Texas.

The new couple had their reception at Caliza Pool in Alys Beach.

“We were thankful we were able to surprise (Rita),” Kasey said. “And I think she was thankful we thought of her with all the mess and chaos that goes into planning and going through with a wedding … just to take time out of the day to go see her and see the look on her face was worth it.”
