CRESTVIEW — About 500 gallons of rinse water containing "very dilute amounts" of a substance used to clean metal spilled Monday at a local business.
The spill, which occurred about 2:45 p.m. at Vertex Crestview Aerospace near Bob Sikes Airport, was reported to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
A failure to cap off or replace a water line running from the rinse tanks to the business’ wastewater system caused the excess runoff, a pollution report from the DEP said. No one was injured, no waterways were affected and there was no need to evacuate the premises, it said.
The DEP said the cause of the spill resulted from the metals rinse process starting before completion of work on the holding tanks.
The water line from the rinse tanks leading to the wastewater system had not been capped off or replaced, according to the report.
A cleanup crew was called in to remove the spilled wastewater from a concrete retaining ditch leading to a stormwater outfall, the report said.
Chemicals from the spill included "very dilute" amounts of Bonderite C-AK 53 Aero Alkaline cleaner, known as Turco Ridoline 53, Bonderite M-CR 1200S Aero, known as Alodine 1200S and Deoxidizer LNC.
