Destin High turns focus squarely to stated goal of $2 million for fundraising campaign and taking applications for upcoming school year.
DESTIN — With a mascot and school colors now in place, the focus continues to narrow for Destin High School ahead of opening its doors for the first time in August.
The main part of that focus? Raising money.
"We're trying to put a high priority on (fundraising)," said Kay Phelan, a spokesperson for Destin High. "Part of those funds we raise are for a portion of the down payment on the actual property where the school will be, so we'd really like to put the focus there at this point in time."
At a public pep rally last Thursday, Destin High announced its mascot, the Sharks, and school colors of cerulean blue, silver and black.
Fundraising efforts also got a big boost at the rally, with a $200,000 donation from Destin residents Allen and Dee Dee Phillips, and another $22,000 from others in attendance to bring the total money raised to approximately $420,000.
The stated goal for the capital campaign is $2 million, with donations being handled through DHS fundraising chair and Governing Board Treasurer Sarah Stone. The school will be located at the current home of the Destin United Methodist Church, with plans to close on the property in late March, according to Phelan.
Money from the capital campaign will also be used to cover expenses such as contractors, renovation and the services of the Collaborative Education Network, which is assisting DHS in grant applications and its search for a principal.
After fundraising, DHS is squarely focused on bringing in students for this fall, when the school will have only 9th and 10th graders. The initial application period runs through Feb. 15, with students and their families able to apply online now at www.DestinHighSchool.org.
Students who are accepted can complete the application process in the spring, and the current plan for DHS is to expand to grades 11-12 for the 2021-2022 school year.
Students aren't the only ones applying for DHS, either. Applications are currently being taken for a principal, with the opening listed on indeed.com and a stated salary of between $90,000-$100,000.
