FORT WALTON BEACH—A science teacher from Fort Walton Beach High School is in the running for the Florida Teacher of the Year.

Devon LaMonica, a 9th, 11th and 12th grade teacher specializing in biomedical sciences, was awarded the Okaloosa County School District Teacher of the Year, which qualifies her for the Florida competition.

The Jan. 23 banquet at the Emerald Coast Convention Center recognized all the Okaloosa County School District Teachers of the Year, along with the finalists and the winner LaMonica.

“It was surreal,” LaMonica said.

She said it was a great experience to be recognized by peer, friend and former instructor, Tavia Marez.

The finalists of the state competition will be announced in May, and the winner will be announced at a gala in July.
