Runners pause to pay tribute to a pair of 7th Special Forces soldiers who were recently killed in combat.
Runners at the start of Saturday’s Destin Ultra 100 mile and Son of a Beach 5k in Destin paused for a moment of silence as pictures of fallen Army soldiers Sgt. 1st Class Javier Gutierrez and Sgt. 1st Class Antonio Rodriguez are shown on the screen of the Splashboards Media boat just offshore.
The two 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) soldiers were killed Feb. 8 while serving in Afghanistan.
The Destin Beach Ultra runs were started in 2010 to raise funds for the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, which provides college educations to children of special operations warriors killed in the line of duty. To date, Destin Ultra runners have raised more than $350,000 for the foundation.
