INLET BEACH — A Chipley man was arrested for DUI after a deputy narrowly avoided crashing into him on U.S. Highway 98.
While patrolling the area of Inlet Beach on Sunday evening, a Walton County Sheriff’s deputy was traveling west on the stretch of U.S. 98 leading to Inlet Beach when he saw headlights coming directly at him. The deputy swerved off the road as a gray Dodge Ram passed him going east in the westbound lanes. Deputies were able to catch up to the vehicle and stop it.
The driver was identified as Jackie Lee Brown, 70, of Chipley, according to a press release from the WCSO.
The deputy asked Brown how he was doing and he said he was, "Not too good." When asked what was going on he said he was trying to get home from the, "beach house." The deputy then asked if he had anything to drink and he replied, "Too much." When asked if he knew how much he had exactly and he again said, "Too much." The deputy asked him if he knew he was going the wrong way down the road and he said, "Now I know."
A search of Brown’s criminal history revealed a previous DUI on record.
Brown performed poorly during field sobriety tests and had a blood-alcohol level of .185/.170. He was taken to and booked into the Walton County Jail.
He was released Monday morning on $500 bond.
