Officials have identified the motorcyclist who died Sunday night after crashing while fleeing from deputies.

DESTIN — A motorcyclist killed Saturday night near Destin Commons has been identified as 37-year-old Thomas Milton Mearns of Fort Walton Beach, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to an FHP media release, Mearns was driving a 1995 Harley Davidson around 8:10 p.m. when he fled from an Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office patrol unit for unknown reasons.

He was heading west on Destin Commons Drive when he traveled into the median just east of Triumph Road, the release said. He struck a tree there, was ejected from his bike and died.
