Dorothy Joan Hackett passed away peacefully at home on May 4, 2023, at the age of 88. The eldest child of Sam and Evelyn Joan, Dottie was born in Pontiac, Michigan, and attended Michigan State, earning her bachelor’s degree in music education. In 1957, she married a fellow Michigander, Notre Dame graduate Mike Hackett. Their marriage would take them across three continents with their growing family. They eventually settled in Fort Walton Beach with their six children. Dottie was a loving and dedicated mother who served as a den mother to her sons’ Cub Scout troop and assisted in activities for her daughters’ Girl Scout troop. In addition to her own children, Dottie was a second mom to many of their friends who continued to call her Mom and visit her long after they moved away.

Dottie loved God, her family, music, and Notre Dame football, but not always in that order. A gifted pianist and singer, she wrote parodies for various Officers’ Wives Club shows as well as singing and dancing in the shows. At Saint Peter Catholic Church she directed the choir which included her husband and several of her children. This pattern was repeated in the Fort Walton Beach Community Chorus, where she sang, and served many years as section leader and briefly as director. A long-time member of the Fort Walton Beach Womens’ Club, she performed with and directed their singing group, The Note-A-Belles.

Devoted to God, Dottie volunteered at the House of Saint Joseph for many years. She was a long-time member of Saint Mary Catholic Church, joining the parish after many years as a music minister at Saint Peter Catholic Church.

Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Sam and Evelyn Joan, her husband Lt. Col Mike Hackett, and her brother Richard Joan. As she is reunited with them in heaven, she leaves behind her children, Joan Brown and her husband Mark, her son Michael Hackett, Jr. and his wife Terri, her son Patrick Hackett, her daughter Kathleen Dolan and her husband Arnold, her son Timothy Hackett, and her daughter Sharon Hackett and her husband Marc. She is also survived by her brother, David Joan, her sister-in-law, Kathy Joan, her sister-in-law Carol Hackett, and her grandchildren, Michael Hackett III and his wife Amber, Samuel Brown and his wife Kimi, Sarah Brown, Libby Brown, and Emily Brown. She was blessed with two great-grandchildren, Jaxyn and Adora. She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and a bounty of friends.

A Visitation will take place on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, at10:00 A.M. at Saint Mary Catholic Church followed by a funeral service at 11:00 A.M. Interment will be at 2:00 P.M. at Barrancas National Cemetery. Expressions of love and sympathy may be placed and viewed online at www.emeraldcoastfuneralhome.com
