In three weeks, Destin will get to experience what has been tagged by many as the “most exciting two minutes in sports.”
Not Destin the city, but Destin the race horse.
“My brother saw him run and said he was strong,” said Kerry Kohlmeyer of Destin.
Kohlmeyer’s brother Brad was at the Tampa Bay Downs on March 12 when Destin, a 3-year-old colt, won the race and set a track record in the process.
Now Destin is destined to run in the Kentucky Derby on May 5-6 in Louisville, Ken.
Destin is owned by Twin Creeks Racing Stables in Versailles, Ken. which is run by Randy Gullatt and Steve Davison.
“Destin is doing very well,” said Gullatt, farm and racing manager.
When asked how they came up with the name for the horse, Gullatt explained that the mother of the horse is “Dream of Summer.”
“And Destin is a great place to dream of summer,” Gullatt said, noting he has visited the white sandy beaches of the Emerald Coast.
Plus they liked the meaning of “Destin” — fate or destiny.
“Destin has got America’s best trainer and the best jockey,” Gullatt said in Todd Pletcher and rider Javier Castellano.
“He’d be a good horse for the people of Destin to root for.”
