The Nicholls State University men's and women's basketball teams were picked 10th and ninth, respectivey, in the Southland Conference, according to the preseason poll voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.

Nicholls' men's basketball team finished with 116 points for the 10th place showing, while the women's team placed ninth with 132 points.

Stephen F. Austin's men's team was picked to win the Southland Confernece title with 14 first-place votes and 268 points. Following Stephen F. Austin were Lamar (second, 234 points, five first-place votes), Southeastern Louisiana (third, 209 points, three first-place votes), Texas A&M-Corpus Chrisit (fourth, 204 points, two first-place votes), Sam Houston State (fifth, 192 points, one first-place vote), New Orleans (sixth, 178 points, one first-place vote), Abilene Christian (seventh, 172 points), Northwestern State (eighth, 130 points), Houston Baptist (ninth, 119 points), Nicbholls (10th 116 points), Central Arkansas (11th, 108 points), Incarnate Word (12th, 56 points) and McNeese State (13th, 42 points).

In the women's preseason poll, Lamar was picked to win the conference title with 18 first-place votes and 279 points. Following Lamar were Central Arkansas (second, 260 points, six first-place votes), Stephen F. Austin (third, 244 points, two first-place votes), New Orleans (fourth, 213 points), Abilene Christian (fifth, 186 points), McNeesse (sixth, 163 points), Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (seventh, 147 points), Northwestern State (eighth, 133 points), Nicholls (ninth, 132 points), Incarnate Word (10th, 92 points), Houston Baptist (11th, 71 points), Southeastern Louisiana (12th, 68 points) and Sam Houston (13th, 40 points).

The conference announced the poll Monday at the start of Southland Basketball Social Media Day in Houston.

The preseason poll is voted upon by the head coach and sports information director from each Southland school. Ranking one’s own school is not permitted.
