The Destin Marlins pounded out 16 hits to defeat the Shoal River Mustangs 14-4 in middle school baseball Monday afternoon.
Leading the sticks for Destin was lead-off batter Jackson Crews, who belted a home run, double and a single. Preston Murphy also had multiple hits with a single, double and a triple. Luke Edelman hit a home run bomb as well as a triple, while Aiden Garrity connected for two doubles and Blake Orr a double and a single.
In the first inning, Destin didn’t waste any time getting started. After Garrity struck out three in the top of the inning, the Marlins then came in and scored two runs. Crews led with a double to left and then scored on a triple to right by Caleb Reeder. Murphy followed with a single to score Reeder.
In the top of the second, Shoal River scored one off a home run before Garrity struck out two more and forced a grounder to sit the Mustangs down.
Destin added two more runs in the bottom half on two hits from Orr and Crews.
In the top of the third, Garrity sat the Mustangs down one more time on three strikeouts.
The Marlins picked up two more in the bottom of the third. Murphy tripled and scored with Edelman getting the RBI. Garrity doubled and scored on a Mustang error for a 6-1 lead at the end of three.
In the top of the fourth, Shoal River picked up a run on a walk and a hit.
The Marlins scored in the bottom half on a solo home run shot by Crews.
In the top of the fifth, the Shoal River Mustangs scored two last runs off a couple of walks from Edelman and a double.
Destin had their biggest inning of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Murphy led with a double and scored on a home-run knock by Edelman. Parker Hill reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a double from Chris Stanford. Orr and Donovan Monsees hit back-to-back singles with runs scoring for an 11-4 advantage.
In the top of the sixth, Destin shut the Mustangs down in short order on a ground out, line drive at second and a strike out by Edelman.
In the bottom half, Destin finished off the game with three runs for a 10-run ruling on the game. Murphy walked and Edelman tripled for an RBI. Garrity and Hill hit smacked back-to-back doubles to drive in runs for the win.
Up next for the 3-0 Marlins is a 4:30 p.m. game in DeFuniak Springs on Wednesday against Walton Middle School.
