Down by four runs going in to their last at bat, the Frankfurt Law Sluggers battled it out to pull off a 22-21 win over Century 21 for the Destin Little League Machine Pitch Softball title.
“We were down the whole game until the last inning,” said Sluggers Coach Carrie Plasier. “These girls all year never gave up. We’ve been down several games this year and we’ve always come back to win it.
“They have like nerves of steel … they’re amazing,” Plasier added.
The Sluggers, with their multicolored socks, finished up with a 9-3 record and championship rings to show for their efforts on the diamond.
In last Thursday’s game, Century 21 put two runs on the board in the top of the first. Lane Fortenberry singled and scored, as did Kira Shock.
The Sluggers answered with two in the bottom half. Kendra Ayers singled to left and Tatum Kirk reached on an error. Both scored on a single by Shelby Plasier for a tie game.
In the top of the second, Century 21 scored the five-run limit with Fortenberry, Shock and Anny Beyhl each getting hits.
Sluggers put two on the board in the bottom half. Aubry Morales singled and scored on a hit from Samantha Beplay. Kendra reached on a fielder’s choice and scored the other run for a 7-4 game.
Century 21 stretched its lead in the top of the third with five more runs. Gretchen Kirby and Fortenberry each had hits.
The Sluggers kept it close with five of their own in the bottom half. Morales hit a singled for two RBIs, while Luci Frankfurt and Kirk each had singles for an RBI. Christine Beplay and Plasier also connected for a hit.
In the top of the fourth, Century 21 put four runs on the board. Lorinna Hughes, Kirby and Kristalyn Winters hit back-to-back singles. Beyhl also had a hit.
Sluggers came back with three runs in the bottom half. Hall had the lone hit.
In the top of the fifth, Century 21 scored the five-run limit for the third time. Shock, Hughes and Kirby each had hits to go up 21-12.
Sluggers put five runs on the board in the bottom half on four hits. Kirk, Plasier, Hall and Samantha Beplay each hit singles.
In the top of the sixth, the Sluggers sat Century 21 down quickly for a no-score inning.
Down by four runs, Sluggers pushed five runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth for the win. Christine Beplay reached on an error and then Ayers singled. Kirk hit a fielder’s choice with Beplay going down at third. Casey Cieutat hit a single to right center for two RBIs. Plasier followed with a single to push in a run. Plasier scored on a fielding error to tie the game. Lucy Hall reached on an error and Frankfurt grounded out to move Hall around. With two outs and Hall on third, Morales reached on an error and Hall slipped in home for the win.
