With the Destin Fishing Rodeo just around the corner, there’s another fishing event scheduled to take place to get those juices flowing — Fishing for Fame.
The Florida Sports Hall of Fame along with AJ’s Seafood and Oyster Bar, Destin Charter Boat Association and All Sports Association are hosting the inaugural Fishing for Fame Celebrity Sport Fishing Tournament scheduled Sept. 14-16.
Hall of Fame inductees for 2018 include Northwest Florida stars Jerry Pate, Roy Jones Jr., Justin Gatlin and Michelle Snow.
Proceeds from the event will benefit the local youth in Okaloosa and Walton counties. Non-profits to benefit from this year’s tournament are Boys and Girls Club of the Emerald Coast, Okaloosa County Special Olympics, Kids on the Coast Foundation, and Eleanor J. Johnson Youth Center in Fort Walton Beach.
A meet and greet VIP reception will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. for boat pairings for athletes at The Henderson Beach Resort.
At the reception, folks will get a chance to mingle with celebrity guests and learn which sports legend will be paired on which charter vessel for the day of fishing.
Tournament fishing begins at 7 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15. The scales will be open from 4-7 p.m. on the docks behind AJ’s. All fish from the day will be weighed in and added to the leaderboard. Spectators are welcome with Rodeo weighmaster Bruce Cheves serving as weighmaster for the event. Expected fish to be weighed include amberjack, grouper, mingo and possibly triggerfish if the fishery is still open.
An awards dinner and reception will take place at AJ’s from 8-10 p.m.
On Sunday, Sept. 16 will be a fun day with boat excursions available in the morning and afternoon.
