After a slow start, the Fort Walton Beach Lady Vikings whipped the visiting Arnold Marlins of Panama City Beach 50-10 in varsity girl’s basketball action at The Fort earlier this week.

“We didn’t shoot it very well at all,” said Viking Coach Holly McDaniel. “I thought in the third quarter we got a little spark and ran the floor a little bit better and off that we got some wide open layups. But we could have offensive rebounded a whole lot better.

“That’s unacceptable … especially as poorly as we shot the first half.”

The Vikings got on the board first with Destin’s Samantha Sherer getting things rolling with a little jump shot. Arnold answered with a bucket from Lexi Griffin. Fort Walton’s Jamilyn Jarvis drew a foul and hit both shots to go up 4-2. About two minutes later, Arnold’s Jordyn Woolsey nailed a 3-pointer for the advantage. Kay Kay Hamburg scored one from the paint for Fort Walton. Arnold’s Frances Ulloa was fouled and made both shots for a 7-6 lead with a 1:38 to go in the first.

In the last minute, the Vikings took the lead for good with Damia McLane hitting a fast break layup and then picking up a foul a few seconds later for a 10-7 mark at the buzzer.

In the second quarter, the Vikings continued to pull away outscoring the Marlins 16-2. Ladariona Claybrone hit an inside shot on a turnover and then Alexsia Gilliam and Jazyah Jarboe-Alford hit back-to-back long shots for a 16-7 lead. About three minutes in, Griffin scored an inside bucket for the Marlins, which were their only points of the period.

At that point, Fort Walton put up eight straight. Gilliam scored then Jarboe-Alford popped a 3-pointer from the right corner. Seconds later, Jarboe-Alford put a rebound back for two points and then McLane nailed a 3 right up the middle for a 26-9 lead at the half.

To start the third, Sherer made a couple of quick steals for long passes to McLane for two baskets. Seconds later, McLane returned the favor, passing off to Sherer for the layup. Sherer was fouled and turned it into a three-point play. Jarvis made two from the free-throw line and then Sherer dished off to Jarvis for an inside shot. In the last four minutes, McLane made her second 3-pointer of the night, giving her a total of 14 points. Hamburg put a rebound back for two points and Trinity Cooper hit one from underneath to give the Vikings a 35-point lead and a running clock for the fourth period.

In the fourth, Fort Walton put up six points and the Marlins made one last point from the free throw line.

Although McDaniel was happy for the win, she said the Vikings still have work to do.

Up next for the Vikings is a 5 p.m. game at home Dec. 4 against the Mosley Dolphins.
