PAXTON — Three weeks removed from a narrow one-point victory against the Bobcats, the Choctaw boys basketball team walked into Paxton on Saturday night to show off everything it had learned in the ensuing weeks.


The answer? A lot.


Coach Andy Thigpen’s crew topped Paxton 81-62 at the Cats vs. Cancer showcase, improving to 7-0.


Choctaw junior Amarion Pettis led the way with 21 points and two assists on 9 of 14 shooting, while junior Ezra McKenna and senior C.J. Matthews chipped in 18 points each. McKenna had six assists, three steals and a block.


Meanwhile, Paxton senior Alonzo Wright dropped a game-high 27 points, and senior Connor Varnum added 16.


Up next, Choctaw is headed to Emerald Coast 16 tournament at The Arena in Niceville to play an opponent that will be determined later. The prestigious tournament features some of the top prep squads in the country.


Paxton is also back in action Thursday, set to face off with Andulasia at the Florala Tournament in Florala, Alabama.

The Vikings didn’t have to wait long to bounce back from their loss to Choctaw on Friday night.


Senior Bobby Millet led the way with 18 points Saturday, sophomore Kion Hayes added 13 and senior Calvin Payton added 12 for Fort Walton Beach, which moves to 4-5.


Up next, the Vikings will host Navarre at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
