While the Destin Marlin softball team posted a 6-0 victory over the Meigs Wildcats, the Destin baseball team came up short 7-2 to the Wildcats in middle school action earlier this week.

Eighth grader Ava Smith threw a no-hitter for the Marlins, striking out 12 in the process.

"Ava is steadily averaging 12 to 13 strikeouts per game, which is incredible,“ said Destin Coach Kati O’Brian. “She's an absolute powerhouse on the mound.”

Backing her up on the mound was the stellar Destin defense.

"Our defense is solid when our opponents do get the bat on the ball and that's all I can ask for,“ O’Brian said.

As a matter of fact, right fielder Addy Taylor had a couple of good catches in the field.

On offense, the Lady Marlins connected for four hits. Smith belted an inside the park home run and Izzy Douglas ripped a double. Connecting for singles were Hannah Isham and Annabelle Shackleford.

“We got the base hits when we needed to with runners on. That’s a major improvement from previous games,” O’Brian said.

With the win, the Marlins move to 3-0 on the season.

"I'm proud of the girls for making improvements every single game,“ she said.

As for the boys, Meigs jumped on the Marlins quick with five runs in the first inning.

The Wildcats picked up another run in the second for a 6-0 lead.

Destin finally got on the board in the top of the third inning. Owen Davis led with a single. Ethan Ramsey followed with a hit. Austin McDowell reached on a fielder’s choice. With the bases loaded the next batter popped up for an out. Price Bowen hit into a fielder’s choice for the second out but Davis scored. The third out came when McDowell got caught trying to steal.

Destin picked up one more run in the top of the fifth. Christian Erlich doubled to center field and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Meigs scored its other run in the fourth.

With the loss, the Marlins move to 1-1-1 on the season.

Up next for each of the Destin teams are 4:30 p.m. games Monday at Shoal River in Crestview.
