PLAY LIFE, LIVE GAMES: Is ’Fallen Order’ the game you’ve been looking for?
Because I’m a Star Wars fan, November is going to be a great month.
On Nov. 5, the novel “Star Wars: Resistance Reborn” releases and will bridge the gap between the end of 2017’s “The Last Jedi” film and next month’s “The Rise of Skywalker.” On Nov. 12, the first live-action Star Wars television series “The Mandalorian” premieres on the new Disney+ streaming network.
What I’m looking forward to the most, and is most pertinent for this column, is the release of “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4 on Nov. 15.
EA, which is publishing the game, and Respawn Entertainment, which is developing it, brought in dozens of media members and social media influencers to play the game for three hours last month. Players were able to travel to three planets and get a good feel for the game’s Force powers and lightsaber combat.
Players were also able to explore the Stinger Mantis, the new space ship you’ll be using to travel from planet to planet, and the crew you’ll be interacting with.
The gameplay has been described as being similar to “Dark Souls” and “Bloodborne,“ both third person action games with challenging combat where any enemy can put up a real fight (there will be various difficulty settings to accommodate players of all skill levels).
The best news is it sounds like everyone who got their hands on it came away from “Fallen Order” impressed and wanting to play more. I haven’t seen reviews from anyone who said the game was bad or even that it didn’t click for them.
But that wasn’t the only recent Star Wars gaming news. EA had their quarterly investors call this week and some new details were released.
Since EA relaunched the Star Wars Battlefront series in 2015, the two games have sold a combined 33 million copies. They also said they expect “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” to ship between 6 million and 8 million units by March of next year. One of those is mine because I pre-ordered it last month.
EA also said the next Star Wars game after “Fallen Order” will release sometime before the end of their 2022 fiscal year.
