Oklahoma! at NWFSC this summer

Special to The Log

The cast for this summer’s production of Oklahoma!, one of the most popular musicals in Broadway history, has been selected. The show will be presented July 15 to 19 in the 1,650 seat mainstage theater of the Mattie Kelly Arts Center at Northwest Florida State College and is produced by the college’s Humanities, Fine & Performing Arts Division.

Set in the Oklahoma Territory in 1906, the musical tells the story of the high-spirited rivalry between the local farmers and cowboys and provides the colorful background against which Curly, a handsome cowboy, and Laurey, a winsome farm girl, play out their love story. Although the road to true love never runs smooth, with these two headstrong romantics holding the reins, love's journey is as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road. That they will succeed in making a new life together there is no doubt, and that this new life will begin in a brand-new state provides the ultimate climax to the triumphant Oklahoma!

As the first musical written by the legendary team of composer Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II, Oklahoma! was a box-office smash and ran for an unprecedented 2,212 performances on Broadway, later enjoying award-winning revivals, national tours, foreign productions and an Academy Award-winning film adaptation. Rodgers & Hammerstein's first collaboration remains, in many ways, their most innovative, setting the standards of musical theatre still being followed today.

Tickets are on sale through the Mattie Kelly Art Center’s Box Office, by phone, web or in-person. As the college's summer musicals are always very popular and often sell out, early advance purchase is strongly recommended for best selection of night and seating.
