‘Practice participation in government’

Special to The Log
Huckabee and several area pastors spoke Saturday night at Destin Assembly of God.

Former Arkansas Governor and current conservative commentator Mike Huckabee, who now makes his home in Blue Mountain Beach, was joined on the pulpit of Destin Assembly of God Saturday night by pastors of area churches who provided prayer and praise before a full house cheering for God’s help to heal our nation.

Dr. Farren Roper, pastor of First Baptist of Destin, delivered opening remarks to a responsive audience following a welcome by Jason Poole, pastor of Destin Assembly, Pledge of Allegiance led by Mel Ponder, and National Anthem by John Taylor.

Without denominational tags, Roper’s opening was followed by prayer and scriptures from Dr. Steven A. Davies of Village Baptist, Dr. Barry Carpenter of Destin United Methodist and Joseph A. Rogers, minister at Pace Assembly of God and former minister at Destin Assembly of God.

Congressman Jeff Miller continued the cadence of a tent revival with his spirited introduction of featured speaker, Governor Mike Huckabee.

Huckabee, a native of Hope, Ark., laced common sense stories steep in scriptural roots of faith and practice to prompt a stream of standing ovations.

Without script, he stayed on message encouraging the audience to practice participation in government, return to the simple principles of the Founding Fathers — liberty, justice, personal freedom, and civic virtue in a firm alliance with God.
