Joe Oder wins Retired Military Person of the Year

Special to The Log
As part of the award presentation, Helen Rigdon of Rep. Jeff Miller’s office delivers a letter from the Congressman in recognition of Oder’s achievements.

To honor a local veteran active in the Destin community, the Destin Area Chamber of Commerce’s Military Affairs Committee created the Destin Area Retired Military Person of the Year Award. During the Chamber’s Nov. 13 lunch, Retired Brigadier Gen. Joe Oder, former president of the Fisher House of the Emerald Coast board of directors, was named the 2012 winner.

“Needless to say I was very surprised to receive the award,” said Oder. “There are so many retired military helping in the local community that this is indeed an honor that I will treasure forever. During these times of multiple deployments, family separations, and caring for so many military returning from war with injuries both internally and externally, it is critical that we as a community give them the utmost in support. I will continue to support the Fisher House as my primary charitable activity. I have seen the benefits provided to our military families in need and want to insure we don’t lose that capability. I will also stay involved with the MAC as a way to communicate with active duty military and community affairs.”

The award was voted on by the entire MAC and was presented by 2009 winner and current Chamber Military Affairs Council Chairman Kim Wintner, Alliance Association Management Co. Inc. For more information on the Destin Area Retired Military Person of the Year Award or MAC, call 850-837-6241.
