The New Year is fast approaching and with it will come an influx of winter visitors to the Emerald Coast. As New Year's Day is Tuesday this year, scheduling events and activities for the club has been challenging. Some Destin Snowbird Club activities will begin this week. The following are open to all current registered members and to those who will become members for this season on Jan. 7, 2013.

Thursday, Jan. 3, tennis will start 1:30 p.m. at the Silver Shells courts, with Jim Boehlert (837-6023) leading the group. Also on Thursday, Edgel Grimm (424-4367) will be at the Destin Community Center for Pinochle at 2 p.m. Bowling will start

Friday, Jan. 4, 1-3 p.m., at Hurricane Lanes in Destin. For more information, contact Judy and Keith Kremers at 424-3968. Saturday, Jan. 5, the storage locker will be open from 8-9 a.m. Please arrive promptly to retrieve your boxes. The locker will also open Monday afternoon, Jan. 7, from 2-3:30 p.m.

Monday morning, Jan. 7, Pat McAlpine will return to lead “Funology”. To tickle your funny bone, and sharpen your wit, join Pat for the first session, 'Twas the month after Christmas, from 10-11:15 a.m. in the senior's center beside the Destin Fishing Museum. Members who attended these activities will be happy to greet friends from past years and welcome new members.

Poker, another snowbird event, has been rescheduled from Monday, Jan. 7, to Wednesday, Jan. 9, from 7-9 p.m. The new location will be the Seascape Conference Center. Jimmy Slis will be on hand at the meeting(s) Jan. 8 with the details. Chis Nastal will be leading Destin Snowbirds who wish to play Mah Jongg, starting Jan. 14 from 11-3 p.m. at the Senior's Center. Members are asked to purchase a 2012 card of hands from the National Mah Jongg League: website or call 212-246-3052.

Everyone is welcome to join in the recreational activities offered at the Community Center. Ping-pong is offered Thursday mornings from 9 to 11 a.m. Pickle Ball, an active game combining table tennis and badminton, is played Mondays and Wednesdays from 12-2 p.m. Low Impact Aerobics classes are also offered, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings from 9:15 to 10:15. For more information about these programs and the individual fee schedules, please contact the Destin Community Center at 654-5184.

Destin Snowbird Carol E. Burrows is inviting all who are interested in knitting to join her at the Mainsail Condominium complex (call 837-7894) from 10 a.m. to noon starting Wednesday, Jan. 3. Each year this group creates different items to be given to charities. This year's project will be the creation of knitted teddy bears, which will be distributed through the sheriff's department to children in need of comfort and support. Carol has found other knitting groups all along the coast.

Starting with the Coastal Library at Hwy. 331 (Mondays 1-3 p.m.), moving west to St. Rita's Catholic Church (Wednesdays 9 a.m.), and on to the United Methodist Church in Destin (Fridays 10 a.m.) are groups who meet on a year round basis. All would welcome any winter visitors to help them create their special projects. Carol is also willing to teach knitting. A time commitment of 1 hour for 4 to 8 weeks is required for most beginners. Contact Carol at 837-8552 for more information.

Next week all activities will be in full swing. Look for highlights and instructions relating to our BIG REGISTRATION Monday, Jan. 7, in next week's edition of this publication.
