A contest partnership between Sodexo and the Dairy Council of Florida made for an exciting afternoon at Destin Elementary School last week as 11-year-old Tahjae Edwards went home with more than just a milk mustache.

The idea behind the parfait contest was simple enough; students who purchased a yogurt parfait in their school cafeteria were entered into the contest via a sticker on bottom of the cup of yogurt.

The more parfaits the students purchased, the greater their chance to win. And winning this contest was no joke, as the prize was a brand-new Apple iPad.

The purpose of the contest was simple enough, too, according to Larry Haile, the general manager of Okaloosa County School District's Sodexo Nutrition Center. It was also cleverly disguised.

"The parfaits cover a lot of the day’s nutritional categories, like dairy and fruit, so it's good and good for the students," said Haile.

To the winner went the spoils, as Edwards’ name was called and he was presented with the iPad. The 4th grade student in Gina Devers class told The Log he was really surprised.

"I thought there was no way that I would win," said Edwards. "But I did eat a whole lot of yogurt parfaits, like at least 10 or more."

Thirteen school districts in Florida were chosen to be part of this "curdlingly" cool contest. Okaloosa County happened to be one of the lucky 13 chosen. From the county three schools produced winners; Crestview High School in Crestview, Bruner Middle School in Fort Walton Beach and Destin Elementary School in Destin.

Thursday was the last field day of the school year at Destin Elementary School, which ended as all of the other field days have; with a cookout and picnic — with all the fixins' provided by Sodexo.
