Make a difference in the fight against breast cancer

Special to The Log
More than 3,000 walked last year and raised more than $122,000.

American Cancer Society volunteers will host their annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event for the entire Emerald Coast at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Village Baptist Church on Matthews Boulevard in Destin. Registration begins at 8 a.m.

Last year more than 3,000 people joined together participating in teams or as individuals for the 5K walk along Scenic Highway 98 and raised more than $122,000.

“The American Cancer Society has been working hard for 100 years to save lives and silence won’t finish the fight against breast cancer, only action will,” said this year’s MSABC chair, Nancy Brown. “We encourage the community to get involved and participate.”

To find out how to get involved, there will be a complimentary pre-event MSABC kick-off gathering at 6 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Ramada Plaza Hotel on Okaloosa Island. RSVP to, or call 850-244-3813, ext. 3556.

The success of Making Strides events depends on passionate individuals who commit to raising money, the people who donate to them, and generous sponsors. Friends, families, neighbors, classmates, and coworkers can form teams. Organizations or businesses can also sponsor teams of walkers. Or, one can walk as an individual.

Registration is free and people can sign up as teams, or as individuals. Those interested can sign up online at Or, email Team Development Chair Angie Harder at or Event Chair Nancy Brown at
