Destin Snowbirds: It’s time for snow … birds, that is

You may have noticed the gradual influx of out-of-state (and some out-of-country) license plates lately as seasonal residents return to the Emerald Coast for sun, fun and a daily glimpse at the emerald waters and white sands of Destin. We welcome all new visitors to the area and encourage you to join the Destin Snowbird Club this season.
The Destin Snowbird Club is pleased to announce the opening of the 2013/14 season here on the Emerald Coast. The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony and first general registration will be from 2-4 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, at the Destin Community Center. The formal ribbon cutting will take place outside promptly at 2 p.m. Coffee and donuts will be available to registered members and will be provided by Tuffy’s Auto Service Center, 4604 Opa Locka Lane.
President George Olson will be joined by members of the Destin community and many of the club members who are anxious for the season’s activities to begin. The Snowbird Club is an excellent way to network, to make new friends, to renew friendships with members from prior years and to become a part of this “home away from home” community. Fees remain at $8 per person for the 2013-14 season.
Early planning has already begun for the new season. The first meeting of the Destin Snowbird Club will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26, with entertainment by Kim Cannon.
Upcoming Christmas Activities include:
Snowbird float in the Annual Destin Christmas Parade at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14. Volunteers are welcome to walk with the float and we encourage your participation.
Holiday on the Harbor Lighted Boat Parade from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15.
Downhome Southern Christmas Dinner, Thursday, Dec. 12.
Tickets for all events will be available at all meetings and registrations prior to each event.
Storage lockers will be open from 8-9 a.m. Saturdays, Nov. 16, Dec. 7, 14 and 21 and from 2:30-3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 18.
Members of the Prize Committee have been visiting local businesses since arriving in Destin. Chairman Paul Hewitt states that local merchants are happy to see the snowbirds return and are generous in their support of the club. In return, we encourage snowbirds to support the local merchants and to support their business endeavors by utilizing their products and services.
In addition to Paul and Nancy Hewitt, members of the committee Pam and David Chandler, Marion and Mike Hoyles, Sigrid and Arnie Aeschleman, Jackie and Terry Roberson, Lee and Dick Schultz and Barb and Weldon Brinkley have all been visiting our local merchants. As each prize is awarded at the meetings, the name of the donating sponsor will be recognized. Sponsors are welcome to join us at our meetings each Tuesday. Sixteen tables will be available for display purposes and sponsors are welcome to supply fliers, business cards, and discount coupons which will be displayed for the membership at each registration and meeting.
