Destin Snowbirds: Festivities under way

Snowbirds enjoyed the music of Tareva Henderson and Jabbo at the Dec.3 meeting.

Snowbird membership continues to climb with each registration. Currently, the membership has 284 paid and life time members and includes 29 new members to the club. The majority of snowbirds will arrive in January, bringing many people to the Emerald Coast for the winter. To date, the membership numbers represent 28 of the states in the U.S. (228 members) and two Canadian provinces (56 members). Numbers will significantly climb after the first of the New Year at the Big Registration from 1-3 p.m. Jan. 6.

Club members were entertained at the Dec. 3 meeting by Tareva Henderson and Jabbo who sang and played a variety of songs. In addition to playing the guitar, saxophone and piano, the couple sang songs that were familiar to most of the membership and brought smiles to faces of the listeners.

Numerous festivities are planned for the holiday season and snowbirds actively participate in events which celebrate the holidays in their “home away from home.” The Craft Fair will be held before the club meeting next Tuesday, Dec. 10, from 9-10 a.m. All crafts will be made by the craftsmen and items will only be sold before the meeting which begins at 10 a.m. This is a great way to get Christmas gifts for Destin friends or family or for that special someone back home so come do your shopping.

The Annual Destin Christmas Parade will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 14.  Volunteers are needed to walk the parade beside the float and if interested, contact Nancy/Paul Hewitt at 850-650-3776. The Holiday on the Harbor Lighted Boat Parade is from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 15, and tickets are needed to attend.  Tickets are available at the club meetings.

A trip to De Funiak Springs to view the display of Christmas Lights will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 17.  The group will leave from the Silver Sands Premium Outlets at 4 p.m. by car and will return to Carrabba’s for dinner following the tour. Reservations are needed by Tuesday, Dec. 10, so call Nancy Hewitt at 850-650-3776 if you would like to go.

Tickets for the numerous other events available to snowbirds during the winter season will be sold at meetings after the first of the year. Golf events, concerts, cruises, casino trips, TGIT gatherings, card playing groups and other events will be highlighted as more snowbirds arrive in town.

Registrations will be held from 1-3 p.m. Dec. 9, Jan. 13, 27, and Feb. 3; from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Jan. 17, and Tuesday, Feb. 11, prior to meetings at 8:-8:30 and 10:30-11.  If you have a registration question, please contact Linda Zukonik at 850-650-7150.

Storage lockers will be open from 8-9 a.m.Dec. 7, 14, 21, Jan. 4, 11, Feb. 22, March 1, 8, 15 and 22 and from 2:30-3 p.m. Jan. 6.

The Emerald Coast Community Band will be the entertainment at the next meeting of the Snowbird Club on Dec. 10.
