Destin Snowbirds: Off to great start

David Hall motivated the snowbirds to stand up and wave their arms to “Sweet Caroline.”

The Roost was full of snowbirds Monday as the big registration was held to sign up both new and returning members of the Destin Snowbird Club. Many people arrived over the weekend and the influx of people at the Destin Community Center on Monday for registration and on Tuesday for both meetings was proof that snowbird season is in full swing on the Emerald Coast.

David Hall entertained the large groups of attentive snowbirds at their meetings on Tuesday and despite the frigid temperatures, warm greetings were extended to everyone as they entered the center.

Monday’s registration was a demonstration of experienced organization and years of learning what works best. Exactly 1,000 new members were signed up on Monday between 1 and 3 p.m. and routines and procedures worked efficiently to help make the process work well. Numerous volunteers were recruited for a variety of the jobs needed to get members’ cards filled out, fees paid, badges made, and people moved through the gym to the activity tables so that tickets could be purchased and people could sign up for events.

Total number of paid members to date is 1,340, 17 less paid members than this time last year. If anyone wishing to join missed Monday’s registration, note that you may sign up at the Destin Community Center from 1-3 p.m. Mondays Jan. 13, 27 and Feb. 3; 10 a.m. to noon Friday, Jan. 17; and 8-8:30 a.m. and 10:30-11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11, prior to meetings. If questions, call Linda Zukonik at 850-650-7150.

President George Olson welcomed the snowbirds to the season and introduced the executive committee to the members. On behalf of the Snowbird Club, President Olson then presented Bryan Ekedahl, of the Emerald Coast Mission, a check for $250 from the Club. Mr. Ekedahl thanked the club for their sponsorship and generous donation which will be used toward their many missions and charitable activities.

Snowbirds were reminded about the numerous and various activities that are available to them during their stay here in Destin. All of these are posted at and changes are updated when they happen and are highlighted weekly in the Destin Log (Saturdays), NWF Daily News (Sundays) and in the Beachcomber (fortnightly).

A few tickets for the Harbor Cruise Jan. 27 aboard the Southern Star remain. The Jan. 25 Mixer Party will be held at the Seascape Conference Center and tickets for that event are also on sale.

The Friendship Club will meet next Tuesday, Jan. 14, at the Back Porch following the 11 a.m. meeting. Next Tuesday’s meeting entertainment will be provided by the Emerald Coast Chorus. Come join us at either or both of the meetings.
