Destin snowbirds are having fun

One hundred nineteen people attended the first TGIT gathering, and danced the day away.

Activities for Destin snowbirds are in full swing and the “birds” are having fun. As more members arrive and join the club, the Tuesday meetings are almost a full house and the interest in “what to do” is running high.  This week, the first TGIT (Thank Goodness It’s Tuesday) gathering was held and 119 people had a grand time getting to know each other and danced the afternoon away.

The Destin Snowbird Club continues to grow.  The latest in the “Top 5” membership statistics representing all regions in the club are: Ontario with 323 and of the USA states, Minnesota and Michigan are running a tight race with 224 Gophers in town and 223 Wolverines running close behind them.  Wisconsin (157) and Illinois (106) are next in line and nine states currently do not have representatives in the club as of registration on Jan. 21.

The total membership to date is 1,732 which is an increase over last year at this time of 64 members. There are 319 new members this year. There are still opportunities to register and become a member of the club on Jan. 27 and Feb. 3 from 1-3 p.m. and on Feb. 11 prior to meetings at 8-8:30 and 10:30–11 a.m.

Did you miss getting to sign up for the first Harbor Boat Cruise? Tickets for the second cruise on Feb. 17 will be sold on Feb. 4 between meetings (9:30-10:55) and after the second meeting. The cruise is on the Southern Star and Chuck Lawson will be the entertainment. Tickets are $15 per person.  You must be a member of the club to attend and you must show your badge numbers to purchase tickets.

The Destin Snowbird Club is looking for volunteers to join the team for next year’s executive committee. Since the Snowbird Club is a volunteer organization, it is necessary to fill positions as they occur and next year, a second vice president, a secretary, a webmaster and two members at large are needed.  If you would like to fill one of these positions or help in any way, please contact Nancy Hewitt at 850-650-3776. Any member of the club is eligible to serve as a member of the executive committee or as a chairperson of an event.

Need something to do? The Friendship Club will meet at AJ’s following the second meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 28. Tickets for the Soundsations Benefit Concert, 2 p.m. Feb. 9, are on sale as well as tickets for the Fashion Show on Feb. 10. Sign up for the golf outings, casino trips, Mardi Gras trip to New Orleans or play poker, tennis, pinochle, bowling or bridge. Join the Snowbird Chorus, it meets between Tuesday meetings, or meet for Funology or quilting. There is something for everyone and if you look for it … you will find it.
