Snowbird season peaks in February

Destin snowbirds enjoyed the music of David Hall at the TGIT Party Tuesday afternoon at the Seascape Conference Center.

Destin snowbirds topped the high for the season to date by bringing in more members for a total of 1,928 for the 2013-14 season. Of those, 1,520 are from the USA, 406 from Canada and two are from Great Britain.  There are 439 new members this year and the club is up 15 new members compared to statistics from last year at this time. So, there is a reason that you see so many non-Florida license plates on the streets and circling the round-a-bouts throughout the day. Remaining registrations will be held at the Roost from 8-8:30 a.m. and 10:30-11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11. New members are always encouraged to join and attend the activities and meetings.

Members at both meetings at the Roost on Tuesday were entertained by the Soundsations Show Choir from NWF State College. The lively musical show served as a preview of their concert which will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center. Tickets are $10 and are available at the door on Sunday.

David Hall entertained Destin snowbirds at the TGIT Party Tuesday afternoon at the Seascape Conference Center. Members had a great time and met new people in addition to having fun on the day before hump day. The last TGIT Party for this season will be held Feb. 18.

Monday, Feb. 10, will be the time for the fashion show “Puttin’ on the Ritz” which will be presented to snowbird members lucky enough to have tickets.  Models for the show are snowbird members and items worn are being provided by Fresh Produce and Men’s Warehouse with make-up being presented by Bare Minerals. What a show this is going to be. Watch out Project Runway and Tim Gunn.

The Snowbird Craft Show will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Feb. 11 at the Roost, with  snowbird craftsmen selling the merchandise.

Plans are already being made for activities for the 2014-15 snowbird season in Destin. Next year’s Eastern Caribbean exotic 7 day cruise will visit the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas and the Virgin Islands Feb. 1-7, 2015. Participants will be bused to Port Canaveral and back to Destin and planning ahead is necessary to ensure early booking and the best rates. See Don Cooksey at the next snowbird meeting if you have questions or if you are interested in signing up for the cruise. Sign up now if you wish to go.

Vacancies on the executive committee are being sought for next year’s season. If you are a member and would like to help serve this volunteer organization, please contact Nancy Hewitt at 850-650-3776.

Although it is difficult to think about leaving to go back to the north, planning ahead is necessary. Storage lockers will be available to members for $8 a box.  Tickets will be sold between meetings Feb. 11 and 18 to reserve space. Call Tom Millar at 850-424-3817 if you have questions.

The Friendship Club will meet at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. on Feb. 11 and at the Magnolia Grill on Feb. 18.
