Northwest Florida State College will host a Community Open House on the college's main campus in Niceville from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on President’s Day, Monday, Feb. 17. An opening reception will be held at 10 a.m. in the courtyard at the east end of the Student Services Center to recognize the President’s Day holiday and the College’s 50th Anniversary.

The Community Open House will be followed by a “Pack the Gym” night for the Raider Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams who will host Gulf Coast on Wednesday, Feb. 19. The first 200 Community House participants will receive a voucher to attend the “Pack the Gym” event for free.

Stephanie Pettis, NWF State College director of marketing and public relations, who chairs the planning committee, noted the Open House and “Pack the Gym” events are unique opportunities for the College to showcase its award winning academic and athletic programs.

“There will be many classrooms that are open for visitors because our classes will be in session during the event. It will give the community a unique opportunity to experience a day-in-the-life of classes, seminars, and athletics on the main campus of NWF State College,” said Pettis.

Some of the unique activities offered as part of the Open House include fire tower and vehicle burns with firefighting demonstrations by the college's Fire Science program; 15 intriguing faculty seminars on everything from fossils to philosophy and career change to climate change; free portrait photography by Graphic Design students for adults over age 17; demonstrations by nursing students of the college's state-of-the art patient simulators; and a humanities lecture that includes a film screening. College staff in admissions, financial aid, advising, veteran's affairs, the career center, professional and continuing education and more will also be on hand at the event.

College performing arts groups will present open rehearsals throughout the Open House at the college's Mattie Kelly Arts Center. These continuous “drop in” performances are on-going and feature the Madrigal Singers, dance line and more.

It is recommended the public enter the event at one of three locations — the main lobby of the Student Services Center, the Activities Center or the Mattie Kelly Arts Center to pick up an event schedule or register for door prizes.
