Reading Buddies Program begins

The Destin Library will host a Reading Buddies Academy from 1:30-3 p.m. July 16 for young adults who have completed Grade 8 or above for a forthcoming Reading Buddies Program during the months of, July, August and beyond.

Reading Buddies is a literacy-based program that matches readers from the first through fifth grades with a trained young adult volunteer who will earn community service hours for high school graduation requirements

Young adults participating in the Reading Buddies program will typically meet once a week to read, build vocabulary skills and complete reading comprehension activities with their assigned elementary aged “buddy”. As designed, the program will give children extra reading practice one-on-one during the summer with a teen mentor who will make reading a fun experience.

Young adults interested in volunteering for or participating in the Reading Buddies Program are asked to contact the Destin Library at 850-837-8572 and complete a program application form. All young adults participating in the program will receive training prior to being matched with an elementary aged child for the summer months.

“Young adults participating in this program will gain valuable experience in leadership and communication skills while simultaneously serving their community and making a difference in children’s lives,” said Will Rogers, reference and youth services librarian.

Proctoring services provided

For local students enrolled in post-secondary online universities or colleges and vacationing students, graduate or graduate level, finding a local testing center where collegiate examinations — online or written — can be administered can often times prove to be a challenge.

During the past several years the Destin Library has been able to address this need by offering free proctoring services by a certified librarian. The program currently is free of charge to bona fide students.

To date more than 75 students have had their online or written examinations proctored at the Destin Library. According to a library spokesperson, over 230 examinations have been proctored in the past two years.

Reference and Youth Services Librarian Will Rogers coordinates and schedules this program and serves as proctor for examinations.
