Local chefs’ dessert competition to benefit Girl Scouts’ Camp Kolomoki

Get your taste buds ready for this Girl Scout cookies sweet tooth pleasure. The Palms of Destin Resort and Conference Center, 4201 Indian Bayou Trail in Destin, will be the site for the 2015 Destin Desserts Chefs’ Competition on Friday, Jan. 30. Seven local chefs will be competing for the crown of 2015 Destin Desserts Champion by making their own original dessert creations utilizing famous Girl Scout cookies.

Tickets are $30 per person and are available for this competition which showcases the talent of each chef as they create original desserts using Girl Scout cookies as the main ingredient. All attending the event will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite dessert. Tickets can be purchased at each chef’s business, as well Frillseekers in Destin, Shear Twist in Niceville, at all Girl Scout Service Centers or call toll free 1-888-271-8778.

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the program begins at 7 p.m., and includes Social Hour, hors d’oeuvres, Dessert Tasting and Voting, Awards, Silent Auction and Entertainment by Shades of Blue.

“Proceeds from this year’s event, now it its fourth year, will benefit the Girl Scouts of the Florida Panhandle’s Camp Kolomoki, just west of DeFuniak Springs in Walton County,” said Gretchen Erickson, 2015 Destin Desserts chair. “The camp is currently closed due to needed repairs caused by erosion and road washout. More than 900 girls were turned away this past year due to the closing of Camp Kolomoki.”

Presented by The Palms of Destin and Chips, with support from Gold Sponsor Okaloosa Heart & Vascular Center, this year’s line-up includes a menu of unique desserts to tempt your taste buds. The reigning Destin Desserts Champion, Trey Griffith of The Wine Bar, will serve as head judge. He will be joined by 2013 Destin Desserts Champion Chef Jim Shirah of the Dewey Destin Harborside Restaurant, and guest judge Susan Benton, editor of 30A East. Competing this year will be:

•Chef Ruston Johnson — Ruth’s Chris Steak House Destin

•Sous Chef Hollie Janitor — Bijoux

•Pastry Chef Denise Wilson — Highlands House

“This year’s event will provide something for everyone’s delight,” said Raslean M. Allen, Girl Scout Council of the Florida Panhandle, Inc. chief executive officer. “Destin Desserts is a fun way for adults to support building girls of courage, confidence, and character.”
