Book 'n' Brunch

The first NWF Book 'n' Brunch book signing and coffee house event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Oct. 16 in the Barnes & Noble bookstore and Starbucks Cafe on the Niceville Campus. The Price They Pay, a new book co-authored by NWF State College Criminal Justice Training Center Coordinator Jeff McGill, who joined the college in 2013 after a 15-year career with the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, will be spotlighted. McGill and co-author Karen Solomon will read from and sign copies of their book and take questions from the audience. In addition, Starbucks Cafe will feature half-off desserts and other specials. Admission is free.

Yard Sale

The Destin Community Yard Sale will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 17 at Dewey “Buck” Destin Park with no rain date. Anyone interested in selling their belongings can sign up for a fee of $15/residents and $20/non-residents. Audubon Society

Veteran birder Lenny Fenimore will lead a bird walk Oct. 17 on the shores of various bayous in the Twin Cities area looking for ducks, raptors, and shorebirds. Wear closed-toe shoes and a hat, and bring binoculars or cameras if desired. Call 863-3039 for more information.

Cancer walk

The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk will be Oct. 17 at Uptown Station in Fort Walton Beach, and will unite the community with a shared determination to finish the fight against breast cancer. Bob Hope Village Rummage Sale

Treasures will be found at the annual Bob Hope Village indoor Rummage Sale from 8 a.m. until noon Oct. 17 at the Bob Hope Village Commons Building, 30 Holly Ave. in Shalimar. The Gift Shop will also be open and is filled with unique, handmade items perfect for holiday gifts. Call 651-2635.

Breast cancer support group

Blood Drive

Sacred Heart Hospital on the Emerald Coast will host the Oneblood mobile unit from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 21 at the main entrance of the hospital. All donors will receive a free Tervis cup and a meal ticket to the hospital’s café.

Bereavement Support Group

Share and learn more about the grief journey you are enduring with an Emerald Coast Hospice bereavement group at 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays at the Destin Library. Groups are free and ongoing.

City of Destin Open House

The City will host its annual Open House from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 22, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Destin Community Center. The public is invited and encouraged to join the council, staff and community partners for a free fish fry, volunteer recognition and presentation. There will be free document shredding from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for household and businesses, City department displays, partner booths and giveaways.

Medicare Update

Cardiovascular Disease Screening

Okaloosa Heart & Vascular Center will hold cardiovascular screenings from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 24 at 36468 Emerald Coast Parkway, Suite 10. The screenings will include Carotid Artery Ultrasound, Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Ultrasound and Peripheral Arterial Ultrasound. Screenings are $75 each or $225 for all three. Fall Family Festival

Catholic Charities of NW Florida will host a Fall Family Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 24 at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort between the Marina and the Village of Baytowne Wharf. Admission is free with a donation of food, money or clothes. There will be food, fun and festivities, and a 2 p.m. raffle (electronics, gift baskets, dining cards and more). No purchase required, must be present to win. Marina Bar & Grill will show college games on the big screens.

Children’s grief camp

Covenant Hospice along with The Village of Baytowne Wharf at Sandestin will host its children’s grief support camp, Camp Monarch, Nov. 7 at Baytowne Wharf. The free camp is for children ages 6-15 who have recently experienced the loss of a loved one or have a terminally ill loved one. Judge Maney at Library

The Friends Guild of the Destin Library will host a program in honor of Veterans' Day featuring retired US Army Reserves Brigadier General Judge Patt Maney at 2 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Destin Library. Program is free and open to the public. Judge Maney will share his experiences as a wounded veteran, the plight of wounded warriors with traumatic brain injury and the T. Patterson Maney Veterans’ Treatment Intervention Act. Call 837-8572.

Holiday Craft Show

The City of Destin’s 10th Annual Holiday Craft Show will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 13 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 14 at the Destin Community Center. The annual Out of the Darkness Community Walk to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention will be held at noon Nov. 14 at Beasley Park on Okaloosa Island.

Horizon Stars Fashion Show

The Arc of the Emerald Coast hosts its annual fundraising event Horizon Stars Fashion Show from 7-10 p.m. Nov. 20 at the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort's Linkside Conference Center. Tickets are $65/regular seating, $120/couples, and $100/VIP area(1 person). All proceeds will benefit The Arc of Emerald Coast. Grand Boulevard Farmers’ Market

The market will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday in Grand Park in Miramar Beach between Cantina Laredo and Tommy Bahama’s. Vendors will offer locally sourced food-based items including produce, eggs, milk, butter, grass-fed beef, chicken, lamb, and pork, honey, pickled vegetables and gourmet jams. Market is held on Wednesdays from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Farmers Market

The WaterColor Coastal Farmers Market will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Sunday at Cerulean Park. Traditional Farmers Market items such as local farm fresh produce, eggs, and dairy products will be available. There will also be a large variety of organic and homemade items such as Greek gourmet foods, hot and jerk sauces, grass fed beef, chicken, and pork. Market is held on Thursdays from March 12 through Labor Day.

This community event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays in Town Center in Rosemary Beach features fresh vegetables, fruits, eggs, honey, cheese and more. Market is held on Thursdays from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Seaside Farmers Market

Get your pick of fresh produce, baked goods, dairy products, native plants and other unique offerings Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Amphitheatre behind Raw & Juicy. Enjoy special cooking demos and activities.

Bridge

Recreation and fitness activities at Destin Life Center at Destin United Methodist Church, 200 Beach Drive, include the following. • Dodgeball: Every Thursday night 6-8 p.m. at the Destin Community Center for youth ages 8-15 years. This allows children to participate in a night filled with dodgeball, friends and fun!
