Destin Garden Club to meet Jan. 8

Special to The Log

Destin Garden Club meets at 9:15 a.m. Jan. 8 at the Destin Library, 150 Sibert Avenue. Alene Ogle, Okaloosa County Master Gardener and past Okaloosa County Master Gardener president, will give the lecture, "Roots."

Members and guests will find this program very informative and helpful in caring for their own plants and landscape. Roots are the lifeline of a plant, taking up air, water and nutrients from the soil and moving them up into the leaves where they interact with sunlight to produce sugars, flavors and energy for the plant. That is the magic of how things grow. Ogle will teach the various types of roots and lead  to discover the main functions of roots. This enlightening program will help you become a better gardener.

The meeting is open and free to the public. The Destin Garden Club meets the second Tuesday of each month at the Destin Library at 9:15 a.m. An educational program begins at 9:30. For those who wish to join the club, membership is available for $35 annually. Membership allows members to attend special hands-on workshops, bus trips and excursions, and holiday luncheons or events.

The object of the club is to stimulate the love of gardening among members; to promote gardening through community projects; to aid in the protection of birds, trees, shrubs and flowers; to encourage city beautification; and to share with members and others the fruit of their studies. In addition to their monthly meetings, the club also meets on the third Tuesday of each month at the Destin Library and plant, weed, and maintain six flower beds there.
