Village Baptist choirs to perform at Carnegie Hall
Distinguished Concerts International New York City announced that Matt Plunk and Village Baptist Church Choirs have been invited to participate in a performance of “The Music of Mary McDonald” on the DCINY Concert Series in New York City.
This performance is May 26 — Memorial Day Weekend — in Isaac Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall under the baton of DCINY Artistic Director Jonathan Griffith. These outstanding musicians will join with other choristers to form the Distinguished Concerts Singers International, a choir of distinction.
Composer Mary McDonald will be present as composer-in-residence as well as accompanist and piano soloist for the performance. Griffith will serve as conductor of the performance and clinician for the residency.
Griffith explains why the invitation was extended: “The Village Baptist Church Choirs received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers as well as the exceptional quality of their audition recording.
“It is quite an honor just to be invited to perform in New York. These wonderful musicians not only represent a high quality of music and education, but they also become ambassadors for the entire community. This is an event of extreme pride for everybody and deserving of the community’s recognition and support.”
The singers will have spent five days and four nights in New York City in preparation for their concert.
“The singers will spend approximately 9-10 hours in rehearsals over the five-day residency,” Griffith said. “Not all of the time is spent in rehearsals, since there is so much history and culture to see in New York City. However, the performance is the primary purpose for their visit to the city.”
Plunk, the worship pastor at Village Baptist Church, looks forward to the occasion.
“We are tremendously excited, honored and humbled by the opportunity afforded the Village Choir to sing in New York City at Carnegie Hall," Plunk said. "We have had the privilege of working with Mary McDonald in years past and look forward to singing her fresh and creative arrangements of patriotic favorites such as ‘America, the Beautiful,’ ‘My Country ‘Tis of Thee,’ ‘God of Our Fathers’ and ‘Let There Be Peace on Earth,’ as well as some original compositions such as ‘This Is the Dream.’
"We have been rehearsing diligently over the last couple of months and have fallen in love with the beauty and varied tonal colors in these arrangements. They reflect the creativity of God, our Father, by transitioning through many keys and by featuring the full artistry and scope of a professional orchestra.”
