2013 Haiti Christmas underway now

Dr. Scott Runnels recently teamed up with another local orthodontist and a friend to donate some care packages to kids in Haiti.

Give Me Shelter Ministries will return to Haiti Dec 2-9 to kick off our 2013 Christmas campaign. This is the fourth consecutive year that we have helped some very needy children celebrate Christmas. Again this year we will provide hygiene packages, small gifts, goodies and a Christmas meal celebration.

GMSM has been serving in Haiti almost eight years. Our goal is not to save Haiti from calamity, but to invest in the lives of its children by ministering to  their basic educational, spiritual, physical and emotional needs.

Our desire is to bring about lasting change in Haiti through education. In an attempt to accomplish this goal, GMSM started a primary school in the community of Croix des Bouquet, Haiti. The Evangelical Baptist School of Trinity opened its doors four years ago, with 104 registered students and 11 Haitian staff.  Currently, we serve students in first through fifth grades.

This year 200 children will attend our Christmas celebration. This will include children from our school, a local church and children who live in an orphanage in Port au Prince.

Additionally, this year we are teamed up with  Dr. Brodie Bowman and Dr. Scott Runnels, two local orthodontists,  who will supply us with dental hygiene products to distribute in the children’s Christmas goody bags.  Also, we have been blessed to partner with Lilybell Hope, founded by Dr. Runnels in honor of his daughter,  Lilybell. The Lilybell Hope Foundation is dedicated to increasing public awareness and education about the benefits of preserving umbilical cord blood stem cells.

The three of us not only share a desire to help God’s people, but also a love of waves. Over the summer, as the three of us were surfing together, we started talking about life, how long we’ve known each other and the different paths that we have gone down. Through this conversation I was able to share with Scott and Brodie about our adventures in Haiti and about our Christmas campaign each year. Both were eager to become involved with what GMSM is doing in Haiti and here we are. I am stoked that the Lord had surf for us on that Friday and that it was in His plan for the three of us to be in the water at the same time.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
