Mary … Did you know?

“Mary did you know that your baby boy will some day walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you’ve delivered, will soon deliver you.” — from “Mary, Did You Know” (Words by Mark Lowry, music by Buddy Greene.)
Mark Lowry raised numerous questions about Mary and her knowledge of Jesus in his most popular song ever, “Mary, Did You Know.” He has a gift for sharing profound truths through music and storytelling that affect audiences of all ages.
Lowry is best known as a singer and comedian who spent more than 20 collective years as the baritone singer for the Grammy-award-winning Gaither Vocal Band and served as the comedic sidekick for Bill Gaither through live concert tours and the best-selling Gaither Homecoming video series and television airings.
Years from now, Lowry’s most enduring legacy may be the beautiful song, “Mary, Did You Know,” that he wrote in 1984.
“My mother made a statement years before, when I was a child, that ‘if anybody knew Jesus was virgin born, Mary knew it,’” Lowry told The Log in 2003. “She also added that the silence of Mary at the cross was the greatest proof to her that the story is true.
“And that statement stuck in my mind. Years later, when I was asked by my church to write a Christmas musical for the choir, I wrote a monologue for someone to say and from that monologue came the idea of asking Mary questions about raising Jesus, and then the lyric was born.”
Six years later, after two other musicians had already tried, Buddy Green supplied the right music for the lyrics — in only 30 minutes — and the modern classic was complete.
“Mary did you know,
That your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Did you know,
That your baby boy will calm the storm with his hand?
Did you know,
That your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little baby,
You’ve kissed the face of God.”
“Mary Did You Know” has been recorded by more than 30 artists, including Kenny Rogers, Natalie Cole, Clay Aiken, Michael Crawford, Michael English, and of course, Mark Lowry.

This one song has turned into Lowry’s career song. “I can't go anywhere without singing it and I don't want to really.”
Lowry’s message for people at this Christmas season is “God sent his Son to earth, not to condemn or shame the world, but to redeem the world. It truly was the greatest gift of all. And — God likes us. He’s crazy about us actually.”
“Mary, did you know that your Baby Boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know that your Baby Boy will one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your Baby Boy is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
This sleeping Child you’re holding is the Great I Am.”
