35 years ago — 1977 Rhonda Muse reigns as Miss Destin Rodeo 1977 as the 29th annual Destin Fishing Rodeo offers a record $30,000 in bonds, trophies and merchandise as awards. George McDowell Sr.’s charter boat Month After May took first place overall in the third annual Marlborough Marina Billfish Tournament.

30 years ago — 1982 Gov. Bob Graham’s office directed state officials to investigate the fish kill in Destin harbor after pleas to the governor for assistance and high bacteria counts in the lagoon were reported. Destin’s first Lutheran worship service was held at Destin Elementary School with Joe Asher as vicar. Okaloosa County commissioners authorize a rezoning study of the Destin peninsula from the Destin Bridge to the Walton County line.

20 years ago — 1992 John Shea, a retired attorney, was selected as Destin’s Outstanding Senior for the third quarter of 1992 for his involvement in numerous committees and boards, including the city’s Board of Adjustment, Destin Water Users Board of Directors, Destin Community Center Board, and Citizens for Good Government. 10 years ago — 2002 Belinda Meadors, who lives in Louisville, returned to Destin to ask public for help in finding a pickup truck that jumped the curb near Holiday Inn on U.S. 98 and killed her daughter, Shelly. Area volunteers take samples of water at a Destin beach and find red tide is present. Sam McNulty, president of Greening of Destin, said a proposal for channeling Destin’s through-traffic down the center of U.S. 98 is good news for drivers, but not for beautification. Mid-Bay Bridge closed, as well as schools, as Tropical Storm Isidore creates severe erosion and damage to Miramar Beach and Destin’s beaches. Sacred Heart Hospital begins accepting applications and resumes for more than 200 positions at the new hospital set to open in January. Poisoned cat found in Destin and cat owners alerted to keep animals inside for a while. Construction of Pier 98 Centre, a premier office building to be built on the corner of Benning Drive and U.S. 98, to begin in 45 days.
