Mako shark washes up in Walton County (PHOTOS)

Around 8:30 this morning, a Walton County deputy called the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge with reports of a mako shark washing up on the beach along Scenic Hwy. 30A.

The deputy said the shark "appeared to be well over eight feet long," and initially, because of the waves crashing over him, he thought the shark was alive.

Crista Stover, administrative assistant with the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge, tells The Log when they responded to the beach near Stallworth Lake, the shark "appeared to be a mako, at least 10-feet long, and unfortunately he was deceased."

The ECWR said they don't know what happened to the shark yet.

The Walton County Tourist Development Council transported the body to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Science Lab in Panama City Beach for testing.
