Development would bring indoor shooting/archery range to vacant Club Overboard building

While a deal isn’t in place yet, plans for a concept known as Family Hunt Club are well under way for the old Club Overboard/Twisted Palms building at 14051 Emerald Coast Parkway. The project will bring together a combination of high-end motorcycle sales, rentals and repairs, a motorcycle customization shop, indoor archery and shooting ranges, and an authentic pizza kitchen.

Local developer Damon Becnel plans to breathe life into the long-abandoned Club Overboard/Twisted Palm building on U.S. Hwy. 98 with his Family Hunt Club concept, which includes an indoor shooting/archery range.

“It’s going to be a multi-function entertainment complex,” Becnel told The Log.

In addition to target shooting, Family Hunt Club will bring together a combination of high-end motorcycle sales, rentals and repairs, a motorcycle customization shop, and an authentic pizza kitchen.

“It’s a unique project that has lots of components that fit together,” he said.

Becnel said he has been talking to various motorcycle manufacturers that he would like to showcase as part of his new project, such as Cleveland Motorcycle Manufacturing Company, Triumph and Victory. Revolutionary Cycles will be offering complete fabrication and custom-built bikes on site.

“We wanted to bring in something other than Harley Davidson,” Becnel said. “These are exotic and things that people don’t normally get to see.”

The motorcycle sales and repairs and restaurant operations will be based out of the existing building, while construction on a new building will be needed to house the indoor archery and shooting ranges. Such ranges are permitted under county ordinances, which the property falls under as it is outside city limits.

As part of the new concept, Becnel said they would be offering motorcycle riding lessons, archery lessons, gun safety classes, concealed weapons permits and shooting instructions. A full service gunsmith will also be on hand.

“We were looking for a spot for the indoor range for quite a while,” Becnel said. “This spot made sense to us because of all of the other things we could do with it.”

Although a “sold” sign was on the property Monday morning, it was later yanked with Becnel saying it was premature.

Local Realtor and Broker John Paul Somers is working on the deal to sell the old restaurant and nightclub and the land, but a deal hasn’t been reached yet.

“It’s not a definitive deal, but it’s still under contract,” he told The Log Tuesday morning.

According to documents on file at the City Hall Annex, the deal would be for $1.5 million. A sign lying on the ground on the property stated that if residents objected to the project, they must file a complaint with the county by Dec. 17.

Club Overboard/Twisted Palms has sat vacant since it closed in December 2010.

County Planner Marissa Martinez told The Log that a development order has not been issued for the project, as she is waiting for an invoice to be finalized from the city of Destin before she signs off. Building permits could be issued by the end of the week.

With big plans in place, Becnel said he is still working out some wrinkles and doing his homework. He is scheduled to have a closing on the property Thursday.

“It’s a place for people to go and enjoy the day,” he said. “It’s like a Big Kahuna’s for adults, but it’s also kid friendly.”
