Body that washed ashore in Destin identified

Special to The Log

The Medical Examiner’s Office positively identified the body of a woman found Jan. 27 on the water’s edge in Destin.

Dental records indicate it is 60-year old Shigeko Freeman of Niceville, who disappeared sometime Jan. 5 or 6, according to a press release from the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office investigators looking into the disappearance do not suspect foul play. The autopsy conducted on the 29th by the Medical Examiner’s Office did not turn up anything suspicious. The final autopsy report is still being compiled.

Freeman’s car was found in the emergency lane near the top of the Mid-Bay Bridge on Jan. 6. The car keys were inside, along with a signed note that said “Call 9-1-1” and had her husband’s name and cell phone number. It was signed “from wife Shigeko."

The sheriff’s office, Coast Guard, and Fish and Wildlife had conducted a search of the water but were unable to locate Freeman.

The body was discovered after it washed ashore behind a home on Indian Trail in Destin.
