MELLE: Pooch Scoop: 'Saturday in the Park' You’d think it was the 4th of July
Something to Bark About: The city of Destin’s “5K Run with the Dogs” had the largest pre-registration number ever at 260 participants. People and pooches came from Pensacola, Navarre, and Fort Walton, just to run and have some fun. There are howlings of a possible 5K run in the fall to follow, so keep your ears pricked for more news.
Lights, Action, Camera: Wait a minute, what lights? There’s always plenty of barkingly great action at the Destin Dog Park, in fact it’s become quite the social Mecca for Destinites and their dogs, but it still lacks lighting for a busy night life with our pampered pooches. Don’t worry. Be happy, as park founder Nancy Weidenhamer and Gulf Power are working on making that doggy day dream come true.
Where’ the Beef?: Ferget the beef, where’s the dough? To beef up our operations with lighting and upkeep too, donations are needed now and the whole year through. Yip, Yap, Yep … the Destin Dog Park is self-funded and donating a dollar a day is a very simple thing we all can do. Just sniff on down the trail to www.cityofdestin.com and type in the site search bar —The Destin Dog Park — then click on the secure Pay Pal donation page and that’s it. A donation box is also located at the Dog Park for locals and visitors, too. Have a pawsitively great time at our Dog Park at 4100 Indian Bayou Trail.
Going Solo: Need a conversation starter at the Dog Park? Just ask someone about their dog. In seconds they’ll be smiling like a proud new parent and within minutes you’ll know everything about that pup and its people, too.
Spring Brrr-ark Places to Eat: Many Destin businesses have canine sections and welcome our pooches with lots-o-smooches. Capt. Dave’s Beachside, Harry’s T’s Lighthouse, Baytowne Wharf cafés in Sandestin, O’Quigleys Sports Bar & Grille, HarborWalk Village’s sidewalk café at the Emerald Grande, and Camille’s at Crystal Beach on old 98, which also has outdoor entertainment beginning in May.
Pooch friendly Places to Play: There’s pawsome trails at Jolee Island in Sandestin, the Bark Park is in Santa Rosa Beach, Baytowne Wharf has bayside paths, Eden State Park is great for hikers and the Destin Dog Park has separate pee-wee sized and pony-sized dog areas.
Now Sit and Obey: When visiting these wonderful Destin-a-tions, dogs must be leashed and have current vaccination tags visible on its designer lapel. The dog parks allow off-leash fun, but every doggy must behave.
Here’s your Barking-orders: Before going to visit these locales, please walk your dog for 20 minutes so that its tank will be empty. We don’t want to wear out our welcome. Parks will issue heavy fines to pet owners who leave behind any canine landmines.
