Work hard, play hard: Kids burn off steam at Kindergarten Field Day at Destin Elementary School

More than 150 kindergarten students gathered this week at Destin Elementary School for a day of play and excitement — Destin style.

Originally planned for Thursday, May 2, field day had to be rescheduled last minute due to the unforgiving, unpredictable Florida weather that often rears its ugly head. But, there was no raining on their parade once the field day finally got underway Monday morning.

Having a literal field day, the tiny tots spent the day outside engaged in a number of friendly competitions including the Mississippi flood, potato sack race and the leaky bucket.

After the 10 kindergarten classes had rotated through all of the 12 field day stations, the students were treated to a picnic of hotdogs, hamburgers, watermelon and other picnic fare courtesy of Sodexo and the school's cafeteria.

"This is the first year we're doing the picnic, so today is a trial run," said Destin Elementary School principal Marti Gardner. "When we have field day for the older classes, they’ll have a picnic as well."

Gardner added that she expected about 180 parents and guardians to join them for the picnic.
