Goochie Poochie to pamper Destin's canine crowd

After breaking ground in February, Goochie Poochie is taking shape. The pet spa and resort is expected to open in July, owner Yuko Barcus says.

If your pooch is in need of a little pampering, Goochie Poochie will provide your pet with a spa and hotel experience that is second to none.

"We are going to offer full-service grooming, a doggie hotel and doggie day care," said Yuko Barcus, owner of Goochie Poochie Doggie Resort & Spa.

Currently under construction, Goochie Poochie will be a state-of-the-art premium dog resort designed with your pet's comfort in mind. The project broke ground in February and work is well underway.

After moving to the United States from Japan eight years ago, Barcus, who was a technology writer with Nokia, told The Log that opening her own pet salon just made sense, as she struggled to find a salon in the area she felt comfortable with. Barcus is teaming up with Barbara Bradshaw, who will be the salon's assistant manager, to "treat your pet the way we would want you to treat ours."

As part of the spa experience, your pet will be pampered in style — whether they are getting a new hairdo, being bathed and brushed or receiving de-shedding treatment.

Express grooming and day care services will also be available.

Doggie day care at Goochie Poochie is an indoor cage-free service and is designed for dogs to play and have fun. Trained supervisors will keep an eye on your pup and help burn off that puppy energy so you can come home and relax with your four-legged friend after a long day at work.

Each day care guest will take part in a group nature walk every three hours, enjoys a mid-day snack, and receives constant supervision while making new friends.

Goochie Poochie's pet hotel is more than a glorified kennel; it's a five-star experience for your pet. With a variety of rooms and suites to make your pet feel right at home, "your pet will have just as much fun on their vacation as you do on yours."

Amenities include plush beds, flat screen TVs, a friendly and caring staff, twice-a-day room service, potty breaks three-times-a-day, and mid-day snacks. If you truly want to pamper your four-legged friend, upgrade to a Royal Suite and your pet will be treated to a big screen TV and a queen sized bed.

Once completed, the hotel will have 38 spaces available for guests of all shapes, sizes and breeds.

Bradshaw told The Log that safety is their first priority, and each employee will be trained in canine CPR. In addition to staff training, the team at Goochie Poochie took every precaution necessary when they designed the building. The resort has a security alarm, is monitored with a fire protection system, offers a top-notch air ventilation system and is complete with a backup generator in case of a power outage.

The nearly 5,000-square-foot salon and hotel will be located at 4601 Opa-Locka Lane in Destin. Find Goochie Poochie on Facebook to follow updates.

Barcus said Goochie Poochie's salon should be opened by July, and the hotel and day care by late summer or early fall.

As construction continues on site, Barcus certainly isn't lacking in excitement. She said it's not uncommon for her to stop by the job site everyday, typically with sandwiches and drinks for the crews.

"I wanted to do something I was passionate about," Barcus told The Log. "I wanted to be able to help groomers in town and help build a good relationship with the community."
