Sue Goetz was honored as Destin's Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year for 2013.

Sue Goetz is Destin's Outstanding Senior Citizen for 2013, and Pat Markey says it was an easy choice.

"You could virtually name her every year," said Markey, who heads up the city's senior program and serves on the award nominating committee.

The Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year award is presented annually during a cookout with the city's seniors. The award is given to an individual that goes above and beyond to better the city of Destin.

Markey told The Log that Goetz has been a top volunteer in the city, and she regularly teaches water aerobics classes at the Destin YMCA and fitness classes for seniors at Destin United Methodist Church. Goetz is also the chairman of the city's recreation committee.

For her part, Goetz told The Log she was grateful to be honored by the city. The spirit of giving back is something she says she's always had.

Goetz has been teaching low impact aerobics and water aerobics for the past 20 years and has been teaching bridge and organizing groups to play for 18 years. In addition to her efforts locally in Destin, Goetz also serves on the Okaloosa County Environmental Council, where she heads up the Aqua Lab program.

While her schedule and volunteerism keep her busy, Goetz said she wouldn't have it any other way.

"I have to look closely to plan doctors' appointments," she said with a laugh.
